Petite clothing brands are where I start when a wardrobe needs more than a shorter hem. I am five-foot-one, and I am always bringing things to the tailor. A sleeve that covers my hands or a waist that sits too low can change the whole outfit. This is the way I would shop for better proportions, without pretending that one petite label fits everyone.

1. Start with petite clothing, then check the proportions

A petite label is a starting point, not a guarantee. Compare shoulder placement, sleeve length, rise and the position of a dress waist with a piece you already like. My first four starting points are a petite burgundy wool wrap coat, a petite striped cotton poplin shirt, a petite brown checked wool jacket and petite red ankle pants. They offer different ways to build an outfit rather than ten versions of the same black basic.

2. Choose petite pants by rise and hem, not height alone

The petite red ankle pants from Lafayette 148 have a slim ankle-length shape, pintucked seams and a hidden side zip. Sedona Red makes a plain knit feel considered. Choose that color on the product page and check the petite size, rather than assuming the first swatch is the one pictured. For a softer line, the petite green silk straight-leg pants from Eileen Fisher have an elastic waist and a fluid finish. The brand lists a 26-inch inseam for size PS in this style; that is a useful measurement, not a promise that it will hit every ankle in the same place. Fir currently has PS, PM and PL options; PP is unavailable.

3. Let a petite dress do the fitting work

The petite black asymmetrical dress from Universal Standard is the relaxed option, with an asymmetrical hem rather than a conventional fitted waist. Check its size chart carefully: at this check, the smaller sizes were unavailable and S and larger had stock. The petite animal-print jersey shirt dress from Boden offers a shirt collar and a more defined line. Select Petite on its page. For a quieter evening shape, the petite dark green knitted midi dress from Hobbs pairs a knitted top with a satin skirt. None is a universal fix for dress length; compare the measurements and think about the shoes you will actually wear.

4. Check shirt shoulders before paying to shorten sleeves

A petite striped cotton poplin shirt can work tucked into a trouser or worn loose over a narrower bottom. J.Crew’s Jules is pictured in White Snapper Red, with a classic button-up shape. Before deciding whether a shirt needs alteration, check where its shoulder seam lands and whether you can move comfortably with the sleeves down. A shorter sleeve alone will not fix a shoulder that sits in the wrong place.

5. Pick a petite knit that leaves room for the rest of the outfit

The petite striped cotton crewneck sweater from Lands’ End is cotton, with a relaxed straight fit and ribbed edges. Choose Petite and Fresh Ivory Multi Stripe to match the photograph. It is an easy contrast to a plain pant, but relaxed does not have to mean hiding the whole waist. Try a small front tuck or leave it loose and check the balance in a full-length mirror. The petite green silk straight-leg pants give that casual knit a softer, dressier bottom half.

6. Check the waist and buttons on petite coats

A petite burgundy wool wrap coat from Hobbs gives a wrap silhouette more color than another black coat. Look at where the belt meets your waist with your normal clothes underneath. The petite brown checked wool jacket is the shorter, more structured alternative, with a brown check that works over a simple shirt. A petite navy peacoat from Phase Eight gives a different option again: a navy double-breasted shape with gold-tone buttons. Check that the front closes without pulling and that the sleeves leave your hands free. Petite outerwear still needs to fit the layers you plan to wear.

7. Know what is worth taking to the tailor

I still expect to take some things to the tailor. The useful question is what needs changing. Bring the shoes you will wear with trousers, sit down in the dress before marking the hem, and check the sleeve with your arm bent. If the whole garment feels out of proportion, try another size or cut before committing to several alterations. The goal is a wardrobe that feels like yours, not a rulebook about what a shorter woman can wear.

For small adjustments at home, browse temporary trouser hem tape and check the instructions against your fabric. It is not a substitute for a properly fitted hem on a piece you plan to keep.
