Mahjong is having a real moment. What used to be your grandmother’s Tuesday game is now the thing everyone wants at a dinner party, a weekend house, or a pool day. The tiles are beautiful, the sets are collectible, and the whole ritual of it feels like the antidote to another night on our phones. Here are the mahjong and game-night pieces worth buying right now, from the designer shelf to the beginner’s handbook.
The Designer Game-Set Shelf
No true designer mahjong set exists yet, so the luxury houses’ game sets are the move. These live on a shelf or a coffee table and get pulled out every time people come over.
Jia Jia Onyx Domino Set
Hand-carved black onyx tiles in a matching case. It is the kind of piece you leave out because it looks like sculpture, and it is the closest thing to a designer tile game on the market right now. Shop the Jia Jia onyx domino set
L’Objet + Fortuny Backgammon Set
The splurge of the edit. L’Objet’s wood case lined in Fortuny’s Venetian prints is the set you buy once and keep forever, and backgammon scratches the same tile-game itch between mahjong nights. Shop the L’Objet + Fortuny backgammon set
