What To Do In Australia

Spread the love

An Australia trip can move from city walks to sandy beaches and an island stay, all within the same suitcase. Our route took us from Sydney to Byron Bay and Hamilton Island, then back to Sydney before the flight home. I would leave enough time in each place to enjoy it rather than make every day a travel day.

Sydney: Harbour Walks, Gardens and Dinner

Start around Circular Quay, with the Sydney Opera House on one side and the Harbour Bridge in view. The Opera House offers guided and architectural tours if you want to see more than the exterior. A walk through the Royal Botanic Garden makes a good change of pace after a morning in the city.

I liked having time for dinner as much as sightseeing. The Paddington was a favorite on our trip. A small day bag, comfortable flats and a light layer can take you from a harbour walk to the table without going back to change.

Byron Bay: Beach Days and a Slower Pace

Byron Bay was the quieter part of our trip. We stayed at The Lord Byron with my parents and spent time around the beach and town. Pack a swimsuit, a shirt to wear over it and a dress that works for lunch or dinner. The clothes should feel easy, with shoes you can slip off when you reach the sand.

Hamilton Island: An Island Stay to Finish the Trip

We stayed at the Reef View Hotel on Hamilton Island. After the city and coast, it was lovely to have a few days centered on the water. Bommie at the Yacht Club is an option for a dressed-up dinner; check its current menu and reserve ahead. Keep one dinner outfit separate from the beach clothes, with a light layer for the evening.

What to Pack for Australia

A fitted tee, light trousers, a simple dress and a soft knit will do more work than a suitcase full of single-use outfits. Add swimwear, sunglasses, walking shoes and flat sandals. Choose the layers for the places and season you are visiting, rather than treating all of Australia as one climate.
