How to Explore Big Sur, California in Style

Spread the love

How to explore Big Sur California in style? Start with layers, comfortable shoes and room in the day to slow down. The coastal views, redwoods and little stops along the way are what make this stretch of California special.

Check access before planning your Big Sur trip

Before heading out, check current road, fire and park notices. California State Parks currently lists closures at Andrew Molera and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, restrictions on backcountry trails east of Highway 1, and closure of the McWay Falls overlook trail. Do not plan around an old trail description or assume a scenic drive is open all the way through.

Check current Big Sur park restrictions and McWay Falls trail notices before you travel. Follow posted closures and emergency directions. There is no beach access at McWay Falls.

What to wear in Big Sur

Coastal weather can change quickly. Bring a warm layer for foggy mornings, something that blocks the wind and shoes suited to the activity you actually have planned. A running sneaker is useful for paved walks, but it is not a replacement for trail footwear on rough or slippery ground.

The Clifton 10 is a current alternative to the older Clifton 8 linked here. The breathable jacquard upper and cushioned sole make it a useful option for everyday runs and paved sightseeing walks. Choose trail footwear when terrain calls for it.

Make time for a slower lunch

Not every Big Sur weekend needs a packed itinerary. Leave time for a meal and a quiet afternoon, and confirm your restaurant or lodging plans before setting out. These photos are from our earlier visit, not a report of current trail access.

Before you go

Check the latest park notices again close to departure. Book lodging or camping only after confirming the route and access you need. Bring layers, keep plans flexible and do not enter closed trails or fenced coastal areas.
