Laguna Beach Farmers Market: Flowers, Strawberries and What to Wear

The Laguna Beach farmers market is the kind of Saturday stop I like to build a morning around: flowers first, a look at the produce, and room in the bag for something I did not plan to bring home. My original photos tell that story through buckets of flowers and stacked strawberry cartons. Those are the colors I would carry into an easy market outfit, too. Think an ecru-and-navy stripe, a little pink at the feet and a reusable bag that can take the extra shopping.

The market is listed for Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon at 521 Forest Avenue, in Lumberyard Lot 12. Check the current schedule before setting out, especially around holidays. This is a morning plan rather than an all-day market, so I would keep the outfit comfortable and the accessories useful. Nothing needs to be too precious for carrying flowers or moving a full bag from one hand to the other.

Start with the Flowers

My flower photo has the cheerful mix that makes a market worth a slow walk: big sunflowers, smaller blossoms and plenty of green around them. I would look through the buckets before making a choice, then think about where the bunch will go at home. A tall vase calls for a different shape from a small jar on the kitchen table. The point is to choose something you want to live with, rather than buy the first bunch just because it is closest.

For the outfit, a soft ecru-and-navy striped shirt gives the flowers some breathing room. The pattern is familiar and practical, but the lighter ground keeps it from feeling heavy. I would wear it with simple trousers already in my closet and keep the rest of the look relaxed. The pink seersucker espadrilles bring in a little of the flower-stall color without trying to match a bouquet exactly.

A strawberry-print reusable shopping bag is the fun part of the plan. I would keep flowers separate from anything that could bruise, and avoid crowding stems beneath the rest of the shopping. For keys and a phone, the small charcoal bucket bag is a different job entirely. One bag is for the morning’s finds; the other keeps the things I need within reach.

Leave Room for the Produce

The strawberry photo is a reminder to leave a little room in the plan. It records one visit, not a promise about what will be at the market every Saturday. I would browse what is actually there that morning, ask the stall about anything unfamiliar and buy an amount that will be used. A good market bag is helpful, but it should not become a reason to bring home more produce than the week needs.

This is where small accessories earn their space. A burgundy leather card wallet can keep little essentials together inside the larger bag, especially if I decide not to carry a separate purse. I would choose the burgundy shade shown here rather than add another dark accessory. That warmer color also works with the navy stripe and the soft pink shoes without turning the whole outfit into one matched set.

The plain black cotton cap is the straightforward choice for a morning outdoors. I would keep the jewelry light, too: the pearl beaded bracelet is enough beside the shirt’s stripe. There is no need for several bracelets competing with flower stems and shopping handles. The blue floral sheer socks are an optional playful detail for someone who likes a visible sock with a flat shoe; I would leave them out if a simpler ankle line feels better.

The Small Things to Pack

I like a market outfit better when the practical pieces have been considered before leaving home. A reusable bag can fold down until it is needed. A card wallet can move between bags. Sunscreen belongs in the morning routine rather than becoming an afterthought once the shopping has started. The invisible-finish SPF 50 sunscreen is a packable option to consider; follow the product directions for use and reapplication, and choose sun protection that suits your own skin.

For little items that tend to disappear into the bottom of a tote, the small cognac leather pouch gives them one place to land. It is an organizer, not another market bag. I would use it only if it fits the bag I am actually taking and if it makes the morning easier. The best version of this outfit has fewer loose things to manage, not more accessories for the sake of an outfit photo.

If the morning calls for another layer, the navy cotton cardigan stays close to the striped-shirt palette. The lightweight cashmere triangle scarf is another possibility rather than a requirement to wear both. I would pick one based on the weather and the bag space available. Either layer keeps the color palette quiet and lets the flowers stay the brightest part of the morning.

A Saturday Plan That Stays Simple

I would make one slow pass before buying, notice what catches my eye, then come back for the flowers or produce I actually want. Keep the bags easy to carry and the purchases separate where that helps. A bunch of flowers should still look good when it reaches the kitchen, and strawberries deserve better than being pressed beneath everything else. That is enough structure for a relaxed morning without turning a market visit into an itinerary to complete.

The outfit follows the same idea: an easy striped top, comfortable shoes, one useful everyday bag and a reusable bag waiting for the shopping. The original flower and strawberry photos are the center of this post. The clothing is there to make the outing feel considered, not to compete with it. A little navy, pink and berry color is plenty for a Laguna Beach Saturday.

A few market-day extras are easy to forget: reusable mesh produce bags for strawberries and loose fruit, a set of small glass bud vases for splitting one bunch across the house, and a small insulated cooler bag for anything that should stay cold on the drive home.
