Bacara Santa Barbara Weekend: Ocean Walks, Dinner and What to Wear

A Bacara Santa Barbara weekend is my reminder to leave a little space in the itinerary. My photos from the resort move from the ocean path to a fireplace lounge and a quiet courtyard. That is the wardrobe I would pack, too: something easy for the coast, a soft layer for the afternoon and a few pieces that feel right at dinner.

A Bacara Santa Barbara Weekend Starts by the Ocean

The Ritz-Carlton Bacara sits on a bluff between the Pacific and the Santa Ynez Mountains. It is a resort weekend, rather than a downtown Santa Barbara hotel stay. I would decide which matters more before choosing it: time on the property and by the water, or walking straight out to the shops and restaurants in town. My ocean photo is the reason I would choose the first version.

For the arrival and a walk on the paved paths, I would start with black straight-leg lounge pants and a top already in the bag, then add the denim chore jacket. The jacket gives soft trousers a little shape, and its pockets make it useful without looking like outdoor equipment. Keep proper walking shoes for uneven ground; the sandals in this edit are for the resort paths and dinner, not a coastal hike.

The natural raffia bucket hat brings a little texture to that simple outfit. It is packable according to the brand, but I would still give the brim space in the bag rather than crush it under shoes. The champagne aviator sunglasses keep the palette lighter than another black accessory. Neither piece is a reason to skip the usual sun protection or to assume a cloudy afternoon means there is no sun. If the afternoon turns into a long stretch by the water, a packable beach umbrella earns its space in the car.

I would use the soft sand-colored leather shoulder bag from arrival through dinner. The Candy Hobo has a zip top and a soft shape, with enough presence to look intentional against a plain outfit. It is the larger bag in this edit, so if the evening is only a short walk from the room, I would carry less rather than fill it. A weekend bag works harder when it does not demand a separate outfit.

The Fireplace Lounge: A Slower Afternoon

The fireplace photo is the other side of Bacara for me. The room has warm orange seating, pale stone and a low table, with none of the hurry of a city lobby. I would leave time to sit here instead of treating the hotel as somewhere to pass through on the way to the next reservation. The clothes can do the same: a good knit, easy trousers and one detail that feels considered.

A cream V-neck cashmere cardigan is the layer I would bring into this part of the weekend. Lisa Yang’s Abby has dropped shoulders and a deep V, so I would wear it with a simple base layer and let the neckline stay clean. It is a softer alternative to a structured jacket, not a heavy coat for a cold night outside. The cream also breaks up the darker pieces without adding another print.

The pink cashmere travel wrap is the optional extra if the forecast calls for it. Pink Sand is quiet enough to sit with navy, cream or chocolate; it does not need a matching bag. I would choose the wrap or a heavier outer layer based on the evening, rather than assume one light knit solves every coastal-weather problem. The navy satin headband is a small finishing piece if hair needs pulling back after being outside.

Dinner at Bacara: Navy, Chocolate and Gold

The resort’s current dining choices include Marisella for Italian food, Lulio for Mediterranean-inspired cooking and O Bar & Terrace just beyond the lobby. I would look at the current menus and book the evening around the meal I actually want, rather than assume the restaurant names or hours from an older visit still apply. Marisella and Lulio list smart casual dress codes, which is a useful starting point for packing.

My dinner combination would be the navy gathered-neck blouse with a chocolate ankle-length slip skirt. The Orly blouse has enough detail at the neckline to stand on its own, while the skirt keeps the lower half simple. The Nina skirt is polyester, not silk, and its ankle-skimming length is worth checking before ordering, especially if you are petite like me. I would rather plan the hem than spend the evening stepping on it.

The black leather T-strap sandals keep the look light. Cecilia has a fine strap rather than a heavy sole, so I would save it for the paved route to dinner and choose something sturdier for exploring. Add the gold double-hoop earrings if the blouse neckline stays open. They can be worn as one or two hoops, which is useful when one pair of earrings has to cover the whole weekend. A small travel jewelry case keeps the pair separate from everything else in the bag.

A Courtyard Moment Before Leaving

My courtyard photo has a different mood again: a fountain, a tree and white arches around the edge. I like keeping these quieter photos from a trip. They are the parts that make a place feel like somewhere I have been, rather than a list of amenities. For a final morning, I would return to the comfortable trousers, wear the cardigan or denim jacket and keep the bag ready for the drive.

This is a small wardrobe, not a requirement to wear everything shown. The navy blouse can go with the black trousers, the cardigan can sit over the skirt and the shoulder bag works with both. I would pack one dinner look I want to wear, one comfortable travel outfit and the layer the forecast actually calls for. A silk sleep mask weighs nothing and makes an early night in a bright room easier. The ocean, fireplace and courtyard give the weekend its variety without a full change of clothes for every hour.
