Under Karl Lagerfeld’s creative direction, Chanel produced cutting-edge designs from 1989 until his recent passing in February of 2019. Going forward, Chanel is bound to continue producing quality garments, in this post we are showcasing jackets from the past 17 years, some of which are available for purchase through The Real Real.

Firstly, Chanel’s Fall 2002 collection featured jackets with high Edwardian collars, conservative tops paired with provocative fishnet tights and outrageous skirts. However, This Wool Structured Jacket from the collection is less out-there, and would fit in perfectly in your 2019 holiday wardrobe.

Years later, jackets from Chanel’s Spring 2008 collection ranged from denim, to polka dot, to this chic long wool coat. The collection drew from 50’s Americana, and touched on so many trends of 2008. The Wool Sport Coat, however, is a piece that fits in, even today.

Chanel’s Spring 2012 collection saw influence from the 80’s and then-trending seapunk—an aquatic-themed aesthetic—mixed with Chanel’s traditional approach. The Tweed Button-Up jacket is an interesting piece, paired with a feathered pink skirt on the runway.

The Chanel Fall 2012 collection introduced an exciting new concept for a three-piece suit: jacket, skirt, pants. Try out that look this holiday season with the Leather Moto Jacket from that collection. This stylish jacket has quilted detailing, point collar, logo embroidery at sleeve, dual zip accents at cuffs, dual zip pockets and asymmetrical zip closure at front.

Tweed, knits, and cardigans ran rampant in Chanel’s Pre-Fall 2013 collection. The collection mixes fashion from Scotland and France, resulting in some peculiar hybrids, conjuring images of a gondola man with a bagpipe in place of an accordion. This Wool-Blend Tweed Jacket will take you there this holiday season, with stand collar, padded shoulders, dual pockets, chain at interior hem and interlocking CC button closures at front.

Reincarnation, a film by Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel’s creative director until his passing in February of this year, and starring Pharell Williams, was developed to accompany Chanel’s Pre-Fall 2015 collection. For example, the Paris-Salzburg Wool Jacket from that collection is an austere navy with intricately braided green trim at the edges and dual pockets.
It’s hard to imagine how a brand can remain on-trend while still creating such iconic pieces. Which would you like to add to your collection?
