What to wear in Paris starts with how you want to spend the day. A long museum visit calls for comfortable shoes. Lunch and shopping need a bag that is easy to carry. Dinner is a chance to change the mood without changing the whole outfit. A small wardrobe of pieces that work together leaves more room for the trip.

City Walks: Light Layers and Comfortable Flats

A fitted tee or fine knit with straight trousers is an easy place to start. Add flats or slim sneakers and a small day bag. Keep a light layer with you so the outfit works when you stop outside for coffee or stay out later than planned.

Museum Days: Keep the Outfit Simple

A dress with a soft cardigan, or trousers with a cotton shirt, feels polished without being fussy. Choose shoes you have already worn on a long walk. One pair of small earrings and sunglasses can be enough; the clothes do not need to compete with everything you are there to see.

A Versailles Day Trip

Versailles is a reason to give a day its own space in the itinerary. The painted ceiling and tall columns of the Royal Chapel are beautiful details to look for. Check the palace’s current ticket and access information before you go, since chapel entry can be seasonal. Comfortable shoes and a layer you can take off are more useful than a separate outfit just for photographs.

Dinner: A Small Change That Feels Different

Use the same dress or trousers with a smaller bag, a good pair of earrings and a different shoe. A fitted cardigan or short jacket gives the outfit shape. Keep the palette close so the pieces still work together the next morning.

A Bistro Stop We Made in Paris

We ate at La Fontaine de Mars during this Paris trip. My photograph keeps the striped awning and stone arches, with the other diners cropped out. The bistro is at 129 rue Saint-Dominique in the 7th, near the Eiffel Tower. Our dinner was duck confit with potatoes and frisee, and steak frites. The photograph below shows the plates at our table, with saucisson and wine alongside. Recent Gault&Millau and Frommer’s reviews support it as a traditional bistro choice, though prices are on the higher side. Check the current menu and reservation information before planning your meal.

A Left Bank Lunch at Ralph’s

We also ate at Ralph’s, the Ralph Lauren restaurant at 173 Boulevard Saint-Germain. Our table had salads, fries and bread; the blue-and-white china and leafy courtyard made it a different Paris lunch from our bistro dinner. The photographs are from our visit, not a promise of today’s menu. This is a setting-first lunch stop: Les Echos praised its American cooking and patio, while Urbansider liked the atmosphere but found the food good rather than spectacular and the prices high. The restaurant currently lists daily lunch and dinner. Check Ralph’s current restaurant and reservation information before going.

The Paris Packing Edit: Shirts and a Useful Layer

Start with trousers or jeans and walking shoes you already trust. Choose one of the shirts below and a useful knit to change the top half of the outfit without packing six separate looks. Wear a shirt for a museum morning, add the ecru knit when it cools down, then button the cardigan over a camisole for dinner with the same trousers.

White cotton shirt with a straight cut and pearl buttons

The Sézane Tomboy shirt in White has long sleeves, a classic collar, a chest pocket and mother-of-pearl buttons. The 100% organic cotton gives it a simple, less fussy starting point than a delicate holiday blouse. I would tuck it into straight trousers for the museum, then roll the sleeves for lunch outside. Check the size guide: the brand advises the larger size if you are between two. It still needs washing and pressing, so do not treat cotton shirting as crease-proof travel fabric. Shop the white Tomboy shirt here.

White-and-blue striped button-up from Balzac Paris

Balzac Paris is a shop I remember from the trip: I bought a pink striped short-sleeve shirt in the Balzac Paris store. The Balzac Paris Léonor shirt in white and blue stripes is another version I like, not the pink striped short-sleeve shirt I bought. I would wear it with straight jeans for a museum morning or tuck it into plain trousers for lunch. Choose this or the white shirt rather than packing both if they do the same job. Check the current measurements before choosing a size; the brand recommends sizing down if you are between sizes. Shop the striped Léonor shirt here.

Ecru merino cardigan with a collar and chest pockets

The Sézane Betty cardigan in Ecru is the shorter layer: merino wool, a shirt collar and chest pockets give it more shape than a loose travel sweater. Leave it open over the white shirt or button it over a simple camisole for dinner. Its length works well with higher-waisted trousers or a skirt, but check the fit before relying on it as your only layer. Reviews differ on sizing, and the maker advises sizing up if you are between sizes. Follow the current care instructions for the wool. Shop the ecru Betty cardigan here.

A navy dress for a different Paris day

In this Paris photograph, I am wearing my navy-and-white dotted goop dress with white sneakers and carrying a straw hat. For a current option with the same easy navy-dress mood, the GWYN Isabel dress in Bright Navy has rounded sleeves, a ruched waist and ties, in 97% cotton with a little stretch. It is a plain navy dress, not the dotted dress I am wearing. The shorter hem makes it a city-lunch or dinner option rather than my choice for a church visit with below-knee coverage rules. Check the size guide carefully: this listing is final sale and cannot be returned or exchanged. Shop the navy Isabel dress here.

Keep your own day bag and sunglasses in the mix, and add a coat or umbrella if the forecast calls for them. The idea is a useful small wardrobe, not a different purchase for every stop.
